Major BBC documentary on gas flaring in Iraq
The BBC just released a significant documentary and a news article (that quotes Capterio) which explores the complex issues around gas flaring in Iraq. Greenpeace also has a long feature article here.
Iraq is the world’s second largest flarer, and by solving flaring, not only can emissions be reduced, but also we can decarbonise, generate power and reduce pollution.
Fortunately, there are many solutions available. Capterio just published a paper that showcases the promising progress that Egypt has been showing in recent times: “Leadership on flaring in Egypt: Recent successes and future opportunities in the lead-up to COP27“. As Egypt hosts COP27 later this year, it has a perfect opportunity to galvanise other countries around reducing their own flaring. See also the coverage of this work on Energy Voice.
