December 6th: global gas flaring news
Capterio
- The EU is considering new legislation around methane emissions. Our paper out today (“Why the EU should enact methane regulation for imported oil and gas“) highlights why the EU should consider how it incorporates emissions associated with oil and gas it imports into the legislation
Industry
- Good to see that ExxonMobil has committed to a carbon intensity target, and includes flaring reduction in this target.
- Interesting development in the Caspian, where a US-based pipeline company has proposed an innovative solution to capturing 10-12 BCM of flared gas from Turmenstan though a new 42 km pipeline into Kazakstan. Many “sharing infrastructure” solutions like this can make a material reduction to flaring whilst also creating value. See chart.
- The EPA held a set of public hearing events around the proposed methane legislation. Watch this space for a summary.
