Capterio presents world first LNG operational and flaring performance study at Gastech
Today at Gastech – the world’s largest gas conference – in Milan, Capterio’s CEO Dr Mark Davis presented Capterio’s latest insights work on gas flaring at LNG liquefaction plants. The work was led by Capterio’s very own Alex Ostridge.
Whilst flaring here not huge, it is still 1%, or 1.5-2 BCM and up to $700 million per year. As global supplies of LNG surge, winning players will ensure their emissions – especially at LNG plants – are as low as possible, not least because carbon intensity will be a key differentiator.
Today, the range between best and “most challenged” plants varies on flaring intensity by a factor of 100. One plant flared for over a year at rates up to 100 million scf/day (that’s more than $500 million of lost product).
Yet by focussing on operational excellence, improved equipment maintenance, better process controls and sufficient boil-off gas recovery, we can materially reduce emissions – and secure the carbon credentials of LNG.
