Capterio joins industry leaders at Gastech to discuss AI, methane and flaring
Today our CEO, Dr Mark Davis, joined a panel of peers to discuss the world of methane, flaring and AI. Huge thanks to fellow panelists Steven Hamburg (EDF), Arnaud Lenail-Chouteau (TotalEnergies), Jessica Shumlich (Highwood Emissions), Ben Webster (MiQ) and our panel chair Axel Scheuer (Energy & Climate Policy Advisory Europe)
The discussions focussed on leading companies are using satellite data and on-the-ground sensors (and everything in between) to better monitor and manage their emissions of flaring and methane. Great progress is being made in technology – and in many cases – practices, but large gaps and opportunities remain.
The panel also discussed the role of AI. For sure there are huge benefits in using AI (indeed, at Capterio we use it for identification, classification, context, diagnosis and solutioneering), but equally, our panel thought that we should refrain from thinking it is an all-seeing technology – it cannot make the primary data (for example). But equally, the waste from flaring, venting and leaking (some 267 BCM per year) is sufficient to generate 3x the power that was used in 2025 for all the data centres in the world (see our latest paper “Relative Performance of Countries on Flaring and Methane”).
Nevertheless, there are huge benefits and opportunities. On the lighter side, Capterio’s chatbot “Flario” however is an example of how Capterio’s research is brought to life. Try it out!
