Capterio discusses flaring as an operational performance diagnostic at CERA Week

Yesterday, Capterio’s CEO, Dr Mark Davis, was on a panel at the prestigious CERA Week in Houston discussing how near-real-time insights from gas flaring bring rich insights into oil and gas (and beyond) operations. Thank you to our fabulous host, Paul Markwell from S&P, and co-panellists, Morgan Bazilian from the Payne Institute and Thomas Fox from Highwood Emissions Management.

Thomas opened the conversation to introduce the wide range of technology stacks used today to measure emissions. Mark talked about how Capterio’s FlareIntel brings unique operational insights into every operation worldwide every day, and Morgan talked about the broader applications and implications of using remote sensing data to inform policymakers.

Our panel was united in the urgency of the topic of using the best possible range of data not only to drive down emissions of flaring and methane, but also to capture more of the gas that is currently being flared, vented and leaked – thereby helping to support economies, boost exports and diversify supply sources for importers.

It’s clear that near real-time flare tracking – as per Capterio’s FlareIntel platform (for every flare, for every asset, in every country, every day) is critical in improving visibility of flaring, in driving operational excellence and prioritising attractive investment opportunities. It also has a unique application in classifying and quantifying “routine” vs “upset” flaring and identifying mode switches (from flaring to venting and back) – thereby helping companies and countries to meet their pledges and commitments to standards such as OGMP 2.0, Zero Routine Flaring and those from the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative and the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter.
